Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to examine the thinking process of junior high school students in solving mathematical problems in terms of cognitive style and gender. This type of research is exploratory research with a qualitative approach. The data analysis technique in this study consisted of three stages: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation (3) interpretation and conclusion. Based on the results of data analysis and observations in the study, it was found that: 1) at the stage of understanding the problems, the three research subjects tended to involve conceptual thinking processes, and male impulsive subjects tended to involve semiconseptual thinking processes. 2) at the stage of planning completion, the four research subjects tended to involve conceptual thinking processes. 3) at the stage of carrying out the plan, male and female reflective subjects tended to involve conceptual thinking processes, only the reflective subjects women were given additional questions to realize their mistakes. In addition, impulsive subjects of men and women tended to involve semiconseptual thinking processes because they were less able to solve problems using concepts that had been learned. 4) at the re-examination stage, the three research subjects tended to involve conceptual thinking processes while impulsive men tended to involve semiconseptual thinking processes. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students thinking process in solving mathematical problems can vary depending on cognitive style and gender.
